9.7.2012 – Change of Direction

Sometimes redirection is needed in order to reach the preferred destination.

What is on my mind right now is that sometimes things in our life don’t go as planned and we have to reevaluate and change our course of direction. We may feel disappointment when this happens, which is most likely because our initial expectations aren’t met.

I am the main organizer for the San Diego Theatre & Performing Arts Meetup group. I just took over this role in February of this year. I am going to share with you a success and a failure in relation to this group. What may be viewed as a success is that since I took over seven months ago, the group has grown by over 100 people. The failure? Hardly anyone actually attends our meetups! We have a large group of over 465 people and it continues to grow every week. You would think that since that is the case we would have an overwhelming response to our theatre excursions. Not so. In reality, I don’t necessarily see this as a total failure, but I do see it as odd. I publicize the events, choosing those that seem well produced and interesting, including different genres to appeal to diverse tastes. But still I have never had more than five percent of the entire group at one meetup. The average turn out is just two percent. It doesn’t really matter, because those of us that attend have a great time. It is just that I really want to get more group members involved. This is my ideal expectation.

In fact the only reason I would view this as a failure at all is because my expectations weren’t met. It simply is a reality, not a failure or a success. The same with the growing numbers of my group. It can be viewed as a success or simply the reality that the group is growing. As one of my friends often says, “It is, what it is.”

A couple weeks ago I saw an advertisement for a play written by Steve Martin that I thought sounded funny. I was hoping that others in the group would be equally intrigued. I scheduled the meetup with expectations of getting at least ten people to the show. Nobody bought tickets! I decided to cancel the meetup two days before our ticket buying deadline. This, is what I was alluding to in the first paragraph of today’s blog. I had an expectation of success, but the result was a failure. Instead of continuing forward in the direction I was going, I saw that this particular event was not going to happen and so, I changed course. It was the best choice to make. Now that I have redirected my energies, I can again, move forward to plan other meetups that will hopefully be of more interest to my group members.
